A Case of Mistaken Identity

Mark 9:38-40

This passage is funny because when a follower or disciple of JESUS writes about or quotes another disciple, they refer to the person as “they, or one of the disciples."

But Mark, who knew JESUS as ‘the Servant,"

John Mark, who was lazy, and in his laziness was used to cause a rift, (used by whom, I’m not quite sure) between Paul, the apostle and Barbara’s, the encourager...

This John Mark who I believed paraphrased the gospel very well, (having written the shortest version), this John Mark..

Mark, said in verse 38...

Now John’

When, I hear the name John, it makes me wonder.

But when I read, “Now” it makes me laugh because it takes me back to my school days.

Take one moment...

Close your eyes...

Think back to 5,6 grade. And just focus on your teacher and how she responded to you or to kids ‘like me’ who always found themselves blurring the line of what was considered proper and improper behavior.

Your teacher would respond. How did your teachers response normally start?

For me it was always, “Now Jamie...”

I would also receive the same response from the other students. If a student saw me behaving in a manner that they knew was innaproriate,

(We are heading back to Mark)...

The students would respond in the manner. Their comment generally wasn’t as pressing as the teachers response, but the ‘tattle’ would come unwarranted and unwanted.

Free of charge, a ‘tattle’ with your choice of nose snub or snicker on the side...

So I have to wonder, is the “Now” here to denote a change of venue, pace or time?

Or is this man who caused this rift between the apostle and his cousin and attempting to cause a rift between, John and JESUS.

Or possibly, between us, JESUS and John...

I will explain further...

John is known as “The Revelator”

Next to Paul, John wrote the most books in the New Testament and in fact, the Bible... all of his books except for one were named after him and the last book has his name in the title... He was the only disciple to die of natural causes after having received different styles of torture at the hands of Domitian, who actually gave up trying to kill John, and exiled him to Patmos where he spent 2 years and he only prayed and he would write. In that time, he wrote “Revelations” which is hands down, by far the most popular book in the Bible.

It is so popular most people refuse to read it out of fear...

This John called himself, renamed himself... “the disciple that JESUS loved”

A name change in that day meant more than it does today.

A name was given by someone in authority and ownership. An owner can decide to exercise their dominion over you. At a whim, and give you a name or change your already existent name...

A natural example of this is noted during the slave trade when “Massahs” took privilege and renamed slaves at their whim...

(I.e. in Alex Haley’s “Roots” I have been told that there is a scene where Kuhnta experiences an indoctrination process and the massah tells him repeatedly, with lashes, that his name was Toby...)

Kuhnta bears down with all that he has in him and repeats KUHNTA!!!!

It doesn’t matter that Kuhnta knows his name at this point, but what Kuhnta was telling his massah, under the sting and blaze of hellish fire is

“I MAY HAVE LOST MY WAY, MY HOMELAND and MY FAMILY!”

But in my name lies my BLOODLINE AND EVEN MY CHARACTER!”

If I let you change my name then YOU have ACCESS!

You can then change my past because when someone speaks of order, my name and what my family has accomplished WILL always be mentioned! I will have no claim because the NAME IS IN THE BLOODLINE!

I must stand for my children to come because in the line of Kuhnta, their IS DESTINY!

Past, Present and Future.

I cant let you push a pin in my destiny and cause a break in my future and call that break....

toby....”

Now he had an option...

He could’ve left early on and taken a few lashes...

Publically known as Toby, but identifying secretly as Kuhnta...

But what a joy it is when you know WHO you are and “WHO’s YOU are!”

When you are blood bought and saved by the precious blood of JESUS CHRIST who knows YOU and who knows your name!

So many in this world are running to the town squares to scream,

I identify AS!!!!

And they have these long list of personality traits to cover because they feel if they miss one then that removes their personality...

If they miss one...

They are left at the end of the day with a void...

Complete emptiness and a multitude and a LEGION of personalities, on their way to the psych doctor for meds all because they feel they were given a name, but they, as GOD of their lives, (read the book of “the Song of Solomon”)they stand in as their creator, and they attempt to use the worlds systems to create their identity...

A quick question....

What ‘name’ are you identifying with and who gave you that name?

So John, obviously knows his name, and so does Mark because even in John gospel he gets to talk about himself and his relationship with JESUS.

but this is Marks gospel...

And this scripture beginning the chapter says, “Now John”

I know I named dropped a lot in this study. But I want to review these two words one more time...

Mark, this Mark who was not a disciple, name drops here. He does in a ‘tattle’ which I discussed earlier. He caused a rift between, his cousin, the encourager and the apostle.

“This Mark,

I mean John...

Wait, no... this John Mark...

Yes that it! Wait...

Who is this again?”

I say this to say, Marks name was not Mark... it was ‘John Mark’...

He wrote one gospel and that’s all...

And I know it had to sting not being able to label his gospel, John Mark or Just John.

(Like Kuhnta, he must’ve thought.. no one will know I, John Mark, who walked alongside Paul who wrote 13, possibly 14 books of the New Testament...

“When they see the name, Mark, will they make the connection? Will any of them identify me as???”)

And even today, baby Christians are told to read John first to grasp an understanding of GODS love...

Not “Mark or John Mark”

John.......

What’s the most popular scripture in the book?

John 3:16...

John goes back and draws a line from creation noting who JESUS is...

John 1:1...

John foreshadows from Creation to the end in Revelations. (Which JESUS made note of when He was quoted by Mark)

John, through visions given by the Holy Spirit, basically opened and closed this beautiful book for us and continued to point to the real SUPERSTAR which was JESUS.

So this is my point.

This book, when I look at it, according to the structure of the way the New Testament was written chronologically was probably put together either, at the end of Johns life or after he died.

And it seems that Mark, John Mark had to throw a little bit of shade...

Even if John was still alive there was nothing he could’ve done.

And I don’t think he would’ve tried...

That’s the point.

Know YOUR name!

It really doesn’t matter what others call you, the real question should be

“what do you call you?”

When you can answer this question, the fight will cease...

If you have been given dominion, you have access.

If you don’t like your name, change it...

As for me,

I have never been in love with my name...

But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter to me what my mother wrote on a paper 42 years ago.

What matters is not “what” I identify with because my CREATOR made me in HIS image. How can I in good conscience and good common sense identify with an ant?

Solomon said, “consider the ant”, not identify with it...

(And that scripture was a fallout to certain people)

Are you a sluggard???? (Proverbs 6:6)

If I identify with JESUS, I don’t need to make sure that “Nike” is on the guest list..

Nike not identifying me...

Is ‘Nike’ endorsing you?”

Try JESUS, HE identifies you and HE endorses you.
